Building Our Home- The Beginning Steps

Working with a home building company, it was only a matter of time before we decided to build a little house of our own. The stars aligned recently and the timing is now. We signed the contract a few weeks ago, and construction is just now beginning.

I've been working for a home building company here in Las Cruces, NM for almost a year as a Quality Manager/Customer Relations Specialist. Near the end of a house being built, I step in and help with the finishing touches. Then I meet the home owners and give them a walk-through of their house,  and then deal with any warranty issues they may have after they move in. I enjoy my job very much, however I'm not that much involved in the actual construction of the houses we build. But now that I'm building my house, I'm going to be very involved with every step.

Right now it looks like this:

In about 4 months it will look something like this:

We have spent the last day talking about colors of stucco, paint, countertops, carpet, tile, etc. and it has been very fun. We've narrowed all that down and once that is decided, it's just the construction that needs to be done.

My degree was in Facility and Property Management and most of my classes were construction related. Since I've worked with this home building company, my knowledge of the construction process has only increased. Now it's time to turn knowledge into experience as this is a first for me in building a house from a pile of dirt. I'm excited for the learning experience and being able to do it with my own home.

Since we signed the contract, all the paperwork got sent in and 2 weeks later (today) a permit was released from the city which allows us to start construction. I'll be taking pictures and taking notes every day of how it's all going. I'll be working along side one of our superintendents who has experience in building houses just like mine so all should go well. We've already made a few calls to get things rolling, but I'll wait to talk about that until I can get more pictures and more action has been taken.

Here we go!
